“Be true to yourself and everything else will just fall in to place.”
Sounds so easy, but how do we know we’re living life authentically?
At the end of the day, do you close your eyes and feel happy with who you were that day, or do you often find yourself saying, “Oh My God! That wasn’t me!”
Now – more than ever – we need to be ourselves. We’re living in a world where our phones communicate better than we do, Paleo is the new Pizza Hut and… well, boys are girls and girls are boys and they should be able to pee wherever they want to pee! (By the way, that’s my F U to North Carolina 😉 ).
It’s time to give ourselves permission to bring all we are and all we have to offer with us to work, and back home every day. This takes courage. As in courage to be vulnerable. I know, I know. It can be a scary thought!
Perhaps we’re scared others will see us as “less than” if we share what we are hiding. When in fact, shining a light on our truth – and sometimes, imperfections – helps others to see us as human. It gives them opportunities to feel compassion and empathy towards us.
When we allow ourselves to show up authentically and feel safe to do so, it creates a supportive, inclusive and more productive environment.
So, how do we create this safe environment so people can be themselves?
A + A = A: Acceptance + Appreciation = Authenticity[Click to Tweet!]
When you accept someone for who they are – for exactly who they are – you are essentially honouring and valuing the good in that person, allowing them to be themselves in any given moment.
This type of environment is supportive, empowering and inspiring.
Can you imagine if you were a big CEO like Apple’s Tim Cooke? A Billionaire running one of the biggest companies on earth, and in 2014, he made the decision to reveal his sexuality. He had a lot riding on this decision, but he took a risk because he didn’t want to come to work as anyone but himself anymore. Not only that, he wanted other people to not be anything but their true, authentic selves. His already inclusive workplace was even more inspired and continues to thrive.
Just like Tim Cooke, we have a responsibility to be who we are, just as we are in this world. And, I challenge you to do just that.
You are amazing just the way you are. You are beautiful, creative, intelligent, talented and unique.
You need to be heard and you need to be seen exactly as you are.
No more hiding. Come out and be the weird and beautiful you that you are! 🙂

I want to hear from you. I want to know what decisions you have made in your life that have helped you be true to you today.
