Transformation isn’t a future event, it’s a present day activity. —Jillian Michaels
With Labour Day weekend passing and Summer coming to an end, it’s time for a little post-summer reprogramming. I look at September like a transformation. Not just Mother Nature making her beautiful changes, but also within myself and my own life.
It’s the perfect time to check-in and become aware of what I’ve accumulated or ignored over the summer months. It’s time to wake up, rise up and get moving again.
On the weekend, I attended a meditation workshop.
It was unlike any I’ve experienced before. I’m very familiar with meditation practice and use it often in my life, but was excited to experience a new technique in a group setting.
With yoga mat in hand and my favourite hoodie, I headed out to the studio. I settled in and quickly learned a new way to breathe. I also learned this was not going to be as relaxing as I had planned.
After three-eight minute intervals of meditating to Digi-Doju music we then were encouraged to get up and dance in our meditative state. “Let’s go!” the Guru said.
Everything in me wanted to run! My fight-or-flight response was at a high. I thought I was either going to:
a) Run and knock over a Zen dancing human.
b) Run and end up in the storage room or smashing in to a window.
Then I thought, eyesight would be helpful here…GRRRRRRR! 😉
But I got up. And I danced.
And you know what? The next 24 minutes were so freeing! As each eight-minute interval finished, I had more energy and felt more alive than the last. And by the end, not only did I feel energized, I felt like I could conquer the world. My world.
Which, by the way, was the goal of this meditation: To get you to know that you are separate from everything. From anything…your mind, your body and your feelings. That you are your own Creator. That you create your life, not the outside world or influences. You do.
You are the master of your own life.
This untraditional meditation fit right in with my September transformation in three ways:
1. It was grounding.
I realize now that going in to this workshop, I felt chaotic in my mind and in world lately. Everything going on around me, and equally in my life, felt extra-challenging. Though I am a very positive person, I have been finding it difficult to catch all the curve-balls life has been throwing my way.
After this experience however, I had a whole new perspective. I instantly knew I was entered and everything around me did not determine my life or its outcome. I could instantly see the light at the end of my every tunnel. Super profound.
2. It created self-confidence.
Don’t you feel that you have an unlimited supply of self-confidence in certain areas of your life, but in other areas you don’t have any? That’s so like me. Put me on a stage in front of 500 people and I’ll knock it out of the park, make me dance in a room with 12 people and I feel like an idiot!
Once I got up off my mat though and adjusted my clothes (and by “adjust my clothes” I mean tuck in my fat), I began to not care what other people thought. My only thoughts were the music and that it felt so good. Also, Fitbit tracked 26 activity minutes! Bonus! Haha 🙂
3. It was 100% transformational.
When you walk out of a workshop feeling like Wonder Woman, something big must’ve happened to you inside to make you feel that way! A shift occurred. Hands on hips baby…Mama’s comin’! 🙂
Whether you want to write a book, travel the world, be a mom or change careers, anything is possible for you. You only need to know that you are the master of your own life. You don’t need a meditation workshop to know this, though it was freakin’ cool.
But, you do need to understand that if you don’t take control of your own life, life will take control of you!
